Most UX design agency projects cost between $10,000 and $50,000. Clutch says that's the most common range for UX/UI projects reviewed on its platform. A quick UX audit can cost a few thousand dollars. A full SaaS platform redesign with a design system can run past $150,000. Big consultancies often won't take a project under six figures. Hourly rates run from about $25 for offshore freelancers to $300 or more at top firms.
That's a wide range, so this guide breaks it down by project type and agency type. It also covers what pushes a quote up or down, how to set a budget, and the red flags that mean you should walk away.

Clutch's review data puts the average UX agency project at $84,973 and the average monthly spend at $8,895. That average is pulled up by a few very large programs. Most buyers spend much less.
UX design agency cost by engagement type
The best way to predict cost is to know what you're actually buying. Here are the most common engagements and what they cost.
UX audit
A UX audit is an expert review of your product or site. You get a ranked list of usability problems and what to fix first. It's the cheapest way to find out where users get stuck before you commit to a redesign.
Published prices vary a lot. Some agencies start at $450 to $560 for a basic review of a few screens. Niek Design Group says most of its SaaS audits land between $2,000 and $5,000. Softkraft lists $1,500 to $2,500. DesignX benchmarks design system audits from $500 to $12,000.
What changes the price: how many flows are reviewed, whether there's real user testing or only an expert review, and whether you get mobile and desktop.
WANDR: a lean UX audit is around $5,000 and takes about 2 weeks. It's built for SaaS teams who need a prioritized fix list fast. See our UX audit.
Design sprint or MVP prototype
A design sprint takes one product question and turns it into a tested prototype in about a week. An MVP design engagement goes further, designing the core flows a startup needs to launch or raise.
- Facilitated workshops only (no prototype): $6,000 to $10,000 (Daasign)
- Full 4 to 5 day sprint with user testing: $14,000 to $28,000 at mid-market agencies (Daasign); $12,000 to $25,000 at ui-ux.agency
- Most mid-market sprints: $12,000 to $20,000 (Brainstormer)
- Product design sprint, 4 to 8 core flows plus a light design system: about $25,000 over 6 weeks (We Hate Vanilla)
Budget $1,500 to $4,000 extra if the agency has to recruit test users. Also count your own team's time. A full sprint needs your PM and tech lead in the room for most of the week.
SaaS product redesign
This is the classic product design project: research, new flows, wireframes, tested prototypes, high-fidelity UI and a developer handoff. It usually covers onboarding, dashboards, or a core workflow.
DesignRush data shows dashboard, fintech and SaaS projects at $20,000 to $100,000, over 1 to 6 months. Clutch says product design projects on its platform most often cost $10,000 to $49,999. Premium studios like MetaLab list Clutch minimums of $100,000.
A focused redesign of one area (say, onboarding) sits at the low end. A full platform redesign with several user roles, complex data and a new design system sits at the top or above it.
WANDR: product design projects start from $25,000. For example, our work with Buildbox cut early-user churn by 32%.
Design system
A design system is a shared library of components, tokens and rules, in Figma and often in code, so designers and engineers stop rebuilding the same button. Pricing depends on how many products it covers and whether it's coded.
| Scope | Published range |
|---|---|
| Starter (core tokens, small component set) | $5,000 to $20,000 |
| Foundation (broader library, docs, contribution rules) | $20,000 to $45,000 |
| Full system (production components, governance, training) | $45,000 to $120,000 |
| Enterprise program (multi-brand, multi-platform) | $120,000 to $500,000+ |
Source: DesignX benchmarks. Galaxywing publishes nearly identical tiers. Daasign puts a typical Figma plus coded system at $50,000 to $150,000.
Expect ongoing costs too. Design system retainers commonly run $5,000 to $25,000 a month.
Website redesign
A website redesign is usually priced by page count, CMS work and integrations. DesignRush puts US web design agency projects at $7,000 to $100,000+. Their tiers: a simple 1 to 5 page site at $7,000 to $10,000, a 5 to 15 page CMS site at $10,000 to $15,000, and a 15 to 40 page site with custom CMS at $15,000 to $30,000. Huemor says specialized agencies that handle research, messaging, UX/UI and development charge $50,000 to $250,000+.

Nonprofit website redesign
Nonprofit sites carry extra work: donation flows, CRM integrations, accessibility, and many stakeholders to keep happy. The payoff can be big. Across our nonprofit work, donations went up 30% on average. WWF-Canada saw mobile donations rise 37%, and Mercy For Animals saw donations grow 32%.
WANDR: nonprofit redesigns typically cost $15,000 to $30,000 for smaller organizations and $30,000 to $150,000+ for larger ones.

Embedded design team or staff augmentation
Sometimes you don't need a project. You need senior designers inside your team, in your sprints, for a few months. Staff augmentation is billed hourly or monthly.
Rates swing widely by seniority and location. Upwork's median for UX designers is $25 to $39 per hour. US freelance rates for experts run $130 to $210 per hour (Freesquire). Frog bills senior designers at $180 to $380 per hour. Embedded UX team retainers can run $15,000 to $40,000 a month.
WANDR: embedded senior designers at $45 to $60 per hour. More on how it works: UX Staffing vs Design Agencies.
UX design agency cost by agency type
Who you hire matters as much as what you hire them for.
| Agency type | Typical hourly rate | Typical project size | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Freelancer | $25 to $210 | Under $10,000 | Small, well-defined tasks |
| Small studio (2 to 49 people) | $25 to $150 | $10,000 to $50,000 | Startups and SaaS teams who want senior people on the work |
| Mid-size agency (50 to 249 people) | $100 to $199 | $25,000 to $200,000 | Multi-team products, design plus build |
| Big consultancy | $150 to $500 | $150,000 to $5M+ | Enterprise transformation programs |
Freelancers
Freelancers are the cheapest per hour. Upwork's median for UX designers is $25 to $39 per hour, while experienced US freelancers charge $130 to $210. The tradeoff is capacity. One person rarely covers research, UX, UI and design systems, and if they get sick or busy, your project waits.
Small studios
Small, senior studios are where most SaaS and startup work happens. Many list Clutch minimums of $10,000 and rates of $25 to $99 per hour if they're based outside the US, or $100 to $149 inside it. You usually work directly with the people doing the design, not an account manager.
Mid-size agencies
Mid-size agencies add project management, development and more specialists. DesignRush puts the blended rate of a mid-tier agency at about $145 per hour, with senior leads at $145 to $180 and creative directors at $190 to $255. Studios like Clay, Ramotion and Pixelmatters list Clutch minimums of $50,000 and up.
Big consultancies
Firms like IDEO, frog and R/GA work on enterprise-scale programs. Frog's discovery and strategy work typically runs $150,000 to $500,000 over 6 to 12 weeks, and full product design programs run $500,000 to $5 million. They rarely take standalone projects under $150,000.
What drives UX agency cost
Two quotes for "a redesign" can be $15,000 apart. Here's why.
1. Scope and complexity. Number of screens, user roles, and edge cases. A B2B dashboard with permissions and dense data takes longer than a consumer signup flow.
2. Research depth. Interviews, usability testing and recruiting users add time and cost. Skipping them is cheaper now and expensive later.
3. Seniority. Senior designers cost more per hour but often need fewer hours. Junior-heavy teams can look cheap and run long.
4. Location. Clutch data shows average UX rates of $100 to $149 per hour in the US, Canada and Australia, $150 to $199 in the UK, and under $25 to $49 in India and the Philippines.
5. Design system and handoff. Coded components, documentation and dev support add real hours.
6. Industry rules. Fintech, healthcare and nonprofit work bring compliance, accessibility and security reviews. See fintech UX design cost.
7. Speed. Rush timelines mean more people working in parallel, which costs more.
8. Pricing model. Fixed price, time and materials, monthly retainer or subscription. Each shifts risk between you and the agency.
How to budget for a UX agency
You don't need a perfect number. You need a range you can defend. Here's a simple way to set one.
1. Start with the business problem. "Our trial-to-paid conversion is stuck" or "donors drop off on mobile" is a better brief than "we need a redesign." It also tells you what the work is worth. Cinepolis grew online ticket sales 25% after a UX redesign. When you know what a 10% lift is worth to you, the budget conversation gets easier.
2. Buy the smallest useful step first. If you aren't sure what's broken, start with a UX audit or a sprint. It's a few thousand dollars instead of fifty, and it makes the bigger project easier to scope.
3. Use the ranges above as guardrails. For a focused SaaS redesign at a senior small studio, $25,000 to $60,000 is a realistic planning number. For a platform redesign with a design system, plan for six figures.
4. Add 10 to 20% for unknowns. New stakeholders, extra flows and dev questions always appear.
5. Budget for what comes after. Plan for development, QA and a few months of design support after launch. Galaxy UX puts ongoing design support at $5,000 to $20,000 a year for smaller products.
6. Ask for a phased quote. Discovery first, then design, then handoff. You keep control and can stop between phases.
Red flags when comparing UX agency quotes
- A price before any questions. If an agency quotes a fixed number without asking about users, goals or scope, they're guessing.
- No research in the plan. "We'll jump straight into UI" usually means rework later.
- Far below market. A full sprint for under about $8,000, or a SaaS redesign for a few thousand dollars, usually means junior work or hidden change orders.
- Vague deliverables. You should know exactly what you get: flows, prototypes, Figma files, a component library, test findings.
- No proof in your type of product. Ask for case studies with numbers, ideally in your industry.
- Seniors in the pitch, juniors on the work. Ask who will actually design your product and meet them.
- Unclear ownership. You should own the Figma files and all design assets at the end.
- Thin or no reviews. Check Clutch for verified client reviews. (For the record, WANDR holds a 5.0 on Clutch across 34 reviews.)

Is a UX agency worth the cost?
It depends on what one percentage point is worth to you. A redesign that lifts activation, conversion or retention pays for itself quickly in most SaaS and nonprofit products. A few examples from our own work:
- Buildbox: 32% less early-user churn
- Cinepolis: 25% more online ticket sales
- Crowdlink: $3.1M raised
- WWF-Canada: 37% more mobile donations
If the problem is small or unclear, an audit is the cheaper first step. If it's big and clear, a senior agency usually costs less than months of hiring and ramping up a full-time team.
