The better ones deliver the adoption infrastructure and engineering alignment too, since those determine whether the system gets used or bypassed.
  2. A component library is a collection of reusable UI elements. A design system is that library plus the principles, tokens, usage guidelines, and governance that determine how and when components get used. The library answers what you build with. The system answers how and why you build that way.
  3. Build internally if you have dedicated design system ownership and prior experience with the process. Hire a design system agency when you don't, when multiple teams need to align, or when previous attempts stalled. Most internal builds fail on organizational complexity rather than design quality — stakeholder alignment, sequencing, and governance, not components.

A single-product system sits at the lower end; multi-team enterprise consolidation at the higher. We scope after the audit, because the audit is what tells us which one you have.

Design systems remove duplicated work at every level: designers stop recreating existing patterns, engineers stop rebuilding components that live in another codebase, and QA stops catching inconsistencies a shared standard would have prevented. Research on Sparkbox's Carbon study found forms 47% faster to build from a system than from scratch.
  9. Look for an audit and alignment phase before any design work, engineering involved in foundation decisions rather than consulted after, and governance and adoption delivered alongside the components. Ask to see systems still in active use rather than screenshots of deliverables — the second is easy to produce, the first isn't.
  10. Yes, and it's the more common engagement. Most teams aren't starting from nothing — they have patterns scattered across products, partial libraries in various states, and Figma files that drifted from what shipped.
